Howard Simkevitz ’91, President
Howard Simkevitz is a General Counsel and Privacy Officer at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research and adjunct faculty at Ryerson University's Ted Rogers School of Management where he teaches courses in privacy law, information technology law and business law. Howard is an active member of Beth Daid B'nai Israel Beth Am synagogue and also serves as the legal member of the Research Ethics Board at SickKids Hospital. Howard is a graduate of TanenbaumCHAT (class of '91), received his BA from the University of Western Ontario, his MS in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University and his law degree from the University of Ottawa. Howard is the proud father of two children, his eldest daughter is currently in grade 9 at TanenbaumCHAT.
Suzy Kauffman ’90, Vice President
Suzy is a partner at Goodmans LLP, where she has a general commercial litigation practice. She is currently the Chair of the Parent Ambassador Committee at TanenbaumCHAT, helping to guide the admissions and recruitment efforts, and is a past Board Member of the Toronto Heschel School and past member of the Parents Association at the Sterling Hall School. Suzy has volunteered in many capacities with UJA Federation and is currently on the women’s executive team. She has an Honours BA in Political Science from McGill University and an LLB from the University of Toronto. She has recently completed a Board Governance Course run by the Canadian Board Diversity Counsel and has advised many Boards through her legal practice. Suzy is a CHAT grad (1990). She and her husband Steve are the proud parents of a TanenbaumCHAT graduate (Amanda '18), a current TanenbaumCHAT student (Josh, grade 11), as well as a future TanenbaumCHAT student, Layla (grade 7 at the Toronto Heschel School).
Hart Heller ’89, Treasurer
Hart (class of '89) and his wife Gila of Toronto are the parents of three pre-TanenbaumCHAT children and uncle and aunt to many TanenbaumCHAT students and alumni. Hart has been involved in various Jewish community organizations, is a past member of the Associated board and is a current board member and treasurer of JIAS. With a background in finance and consulting, he is currently an Executive Vice President at LynCar, a plumbing and fire sprinkler products distribution company.
Jonathan Zepp, Immediate Past President
Jonathan is a partner at the law firm of Robins Appleby LLP. Jonathan is a business law lawyer advising clients on matters of corporate and commercial law. Jonathan is the former Chairperson of The Canadian Shaare Zedek Hospital Foundation where he remains a director. He is a former director and member of the Executive Committee of Associated Hebrew Schools. Jonathan is also an active member at his synagogue, Chabad Flamingo. Jonathan is a passionate proponent of Jewish day school education. Jonathan and his wife, Tracy, are parents to two TanenbaumCHAT graduates, Noah, Class of 2016 and Lilly, Class of 2018.
Eric is a lawyer in private practice serving the investment management community. Previously, Eric was the Senior Vice President and Head of Legal – Canada for Invesco. In that capacity, he was a member of the board of Invesco Canada Ltd., a regulated entity, for the past 10 years and also served as Secretary to the board and governance structures related to public mutual funds. Eric was a member of the Executive Committee of Invesco Canada during that time. Prior thereto, he acted as Secretary to various boards of Mackenzie Financial Corporation and subsidiaries. Eric served on the Ontario Securities Commission’s Registrant Advisory Committee from 2015-2018 and is a frequent commenter of proposed securities regulations. He was named to the GC Powerlist 2016 by Legal 500. Eric recently obtained his ICD.D designation. Eric has a daughter at TanenbaumCHAT in Grade 10.
Rahn is President of Dodick Landau Inc. He is a Licensed Insolvency Trustee and CPA advising businesses on matters of financial and operational restructuring for over 20 years. Rahn is a former board member and treasurer of Fighting Blindness Canada and is a member of the finance committee of Adath Israel Congregation. Rahn attended Hebrew day schools in Montreal where he developed a passion for Jewish education and continuity. He has visited Israel 12 times throughout his life and has a deep connection with Israel. Rahn and Tania are proud parents of three sons, his eldest is currently attending TanenbaumCHAT in grade 11. His two younger sons who are in grade 2 and 8 at Associated Hebrew Day Schools are looking forward to attending TanenbaumCHAT in the future.
Andrea holds a Bachelor of Science Honors degree from Queen’s University, a Master’s in Experimental Medicine from McGill and a Ph.D. in Clinical Biochemistry from the University of Toronto. Andrea has served on the Board of Directors at Robbins Hebrew Academy (RHA) and was President of the Parents’ Association at RHA. She has also served on the board of directors of Beth Tikvah Synagogue. Andrea has three children, one of whom is in medical school at McMaster University, one in her fourth year at Western University and one currently in Grade 12 at TanenbaumCHAT. Andrea works at Sanofi Pharmaceuticals, in the department of Government Affairs and Market Access. She has served on the board of TanenbaumCHAT for the past three years and is looking forward to continuing on the board and promoting TanenbaumCHAT’s academic excellence with the objective of recruiting new students and retaining our current students.
Claire is passionate about Jewish Education, Jewish continuity, and Israel. She and her husband Howard are the proud parents of four amazing children, all of whom are TanenbaumCHAT alumni. Claire is a former board member and vice-president of Associated Hebrew Schools. She has served on the board of TanenbaumCHAT since 2017 and is currently the Chair of the Governance Committee. As well, Claire serves as Vice-President and Treasurer of the Association of the Soldiers of Israel – Canada. Claire was called to the Ontario Bar in 1994 and is self-employed in the areas of property and asset management. Claire lives in Thornhill and is a member of Chabad Flamingo.
Sara Gottlieb ’91
Formerly an Institutional Money Manager, Sara now devotes her time to volunteering in Toronto and Israel. Sara currently serves as President of Canadian Friends of the Duvdevan Foundation and is Co-Chair of the Israel and Overseas Committee of UJA. She is a member of the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University Toronto Board, a member of the Board of UJA Federation, and a member of the Partnership Council of the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI). Sara has held many fundraising roles within the community including: Chair of the Einstein Gala, Chair of Lion of Judah for UJA, Atarah Chair of UJA, and Fundraising Chair at Robbins Hebrew Academy. Sara is married to Darren and they have two sons: TanenbaumCHAT student, Koby, and Cooper, currently at Robbins Hebrew Academy. For fun, Sara loves to run marathons.
Alan Grad ’88
Alan has served on the Board of Directors of TanenbaumCHAT since 2016. After graduating from CHAT in 1988, Alan continued his studies at York University in Toronto where he obtained a BA in Economics and graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in1994. Alan has since gone on to hold legal positions of increasing responsibility in private practice and as in-house legal counsel and currently serves as Senior Vice President, Legal and General Counsel at the DBRS credit rating agency. Alan is married to Sandy Leider. They have 3 children, including a Class of 2017 TannenbaumCHAT graduate, a Class of 2019 TannenbaumCHAT student and an incoming Class of 2021TannenbaumCHAT student. Alan looks forward to continuing to be a valuable contributor to the Board of Directors.
Mark Gross' business experience spans over 20 years in business management, finance and real estate. Mr. Gross attended the University of Western Ontario and earned his HBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business. Mark founded Gross Capital, a Private Equity firm with a focus on real estate investment that purchases, develops and manages commercial real estate on behalf of Canadian and US investors. Marks serves as CEO of Zedd Customer Solutions Inc., a Gross Capital Investment in the Business Process Outsourcing space Mark is the proud father of two current students in TanenbaumCHAT's New Stream program.
Jordan Kupinsky '90
Jordan has more than twenty years of experience in merchant banking, investment banking and law. Jordan is the Managing Partner of Windsor Private Capital, a Toronto-based merchant bank managing private debt and equity investments on behalf of high-net-worth, family office and pension fund investors. He has served on several public and private company boards including Concordia International, Atlas Financial Holdings, Xceed Mortgage Corporation and Perk Inc. After graduating CHAT, Jordan received his B.A. from York University and his JD/MBA from the Schulich School of Business and Osgoode Hall Law School. Jordan is the proud father of two current TanenbaumCHAT students, Hayley (Grade 12) and Justin (Grade 10), and hopefully a third, Ryan (currently in Grade 5).
David is a managing Director at Onex Corporation, a private equity form headquartered in Toronto, where he has worked for 16 years. Prior to that, David was a management consultant at McKinsey & Co. David has served as a board member of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and was a member of UJA's strategic planning committee on fund raising. David was the co-chair of the Shaarei Shomayim capital campaign. David and his wife, Naomi, have four children with their eldest attending TanenbaumCHAT in grade 10. David qualified as a chartered accountant, has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.Comm. from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.
Joel Monson is Senior Vice-President, Corporate Counsel at Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts where he supports most areas of the business including operations, development, finance, marketing, and more. In addition, Joel's responsibilities include management of dispute resolution and litigation and serving as a member of the company's Pension and Profit Sharing Committee. Prior to joining Four Seasons, Joel practiced corporate commercial law at Goodmans LLP. Joel and his wife, Rochelle, are the proud parents of four children all of whom are, have been, or will soon be, students of TanenbaumCHAT. Joel was a founding member and first President of the Forest Hill Jewish Centre, and is a current board member of, and previously served as treasurer and chair of the board at, Shaarei Shomayim Congregation in Toronto.
Kevin’s background is as an assurance and business advisory partner with a focus on the financial services and investment management industries. A CPA, Kevin is the Regional Managing Partner of Grant Thornton for Central Canada, where he leads some 750 colleagues across 17 offices in the delivery of advisory, tax and assurance services. Kevin is also responsible for coaching partners and, as part of Grant Thornton’s growth strategy, onboarding senior talent, and other investment opportunities. He has experience working with owners, presidents, CEOs, CFOs and presenting at boards of directors’ meetings as well as working with stakeholder groups to achieve their objectives. Kevin moved from South Africa to Toronto in 2001. He currently has two daughters at TanenbaumCHAT and a son at Bialik Hebrew Day School.
Craig is the CEO of Cidel Bank Canada. Prior to joining Cidel as a co-founder in 1999, he was a managing director in CIBC World Markets’ Financial Products Division. He is a member of the Pension and Endowment Investment Advisory Committee to the President of the University of Toronto, a member of the investment committee at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care’s Foundation, and a Foundation Trustee for the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto. Craig was previously a director of the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, director and treasurer of Baycrest, co-chair of the Baycrest investment committee and President of Robbins Hebrew Academy. Craig graduated with a BSc in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton Business School. He and his wife Elyse Zelunka are proud parents to two TanenbaumCHAT grads (Sarah ’18 and Evan ’20), Daniel (Grade 10) and Sophie, a future TanenbaumCHAT student.
Jordan Rodney is President of MaxPeople and founder of Rodney Employment Law, an HR and Employment Law firm. Prior to starting his own firm, Jordan worked in the corporate world in the beverage, broadcasting, distribution and manufacturing industries. Jordan is an employment lawyer who regularly advises employers, including boards and businesses in the educational field, on a wide variety of workplace issues. Jordan obtained a B.A. in Political Science from York University, a Masters of Industrial Relations from Queens’ University and an LL.B from the University of Western Ontario. Jordan was previously an instructor teaching Labor Relations at the Schulich School of Business. Jordan and his wife Julie Ruben Rodney are the proud parents of a TanenbaumCHAT graduate (Hallie ’17), a TanenbaumCHAT current student (Mitchell), and an incoming student in September (Layla). Jordan’s family is actively involved in Beth Torah synagogue and deeply connected to Young Judaea, particularly Camp Kadimah, where all three kids attend. Jordan is also passionate about the New Stream program education given how the New Stream program has been transformational for his family and looks forward to being a valuable contributor to the board.
Tilda was born in Hamilton, Ontario and spend her formative years there before moving to Toronto. She resides in Thornhill, together with her husband Malcolm and their family. Tilda and Malcolm have three children who attended the Jewish day school system. Their two eldest children attended university and the youngest, Madeleine is currently in Grade 12 at TanenbaumCHAT. Tilda is a lawyer, mediator and arbitrator and has been an active member within the legal community since her call to the Bar in 1993. In 2015, she was appointed as a Dispute Resolution Officer in Superior Court. Tilda is also an active member of her synagogue, Chabad Flamingo.
Shelley Samel is an advertising and marketing lawyer at Shelley Samel Law. She started her boutique firm in December 2014 after spending 15 years at Gowlings LLP, where she was a partner in the advertising and marketing law practice group. Shelley is currently a member of the UJA Joshua Institute leadership accelerator program and has recently served on two committees of UJA Federation. She also served as a member of the board of directors of The Leo Baeck Day School for six years, leading several committees as well as a term as co-president. Shelley grew up in Ottawa and studied journalism before moving to Toronto to attend Osgoode Hall Law School. Shelley and her husband Brian Weiner live in Thornhill and are the proud parents of a current TanenbaumCHAT student (Jamie, Grade 11) as well as a future TanenbaumCHAT student (Talia, Grade 8 at The Leo Baeck Day School).
Shawn is a partner with Ernst & Young, serving in their Information Technology Advisory practice. He has over 25 years of experience in consulting, with a focus on leading large-scale business and IT transformation engagements. Shawn attended the University of Western Ontario and earned his HBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business. Shawn and his wife Debbie are proud parents of TanenbaumCHAT student Ava, and Leah, currently at the Toronto Heschel School. Shawn recently spent time volunteering in Rwanda, providing pro bono consulting to local startup companies as part of a global social sabbatical program. In his spare time, Shawn enjoys running, travel and playing hockey.
A commercial litigation lawyer who was called to the Bar in 1990, Stephen is a long time and present Board member at the Beth Torah Congregation where he has held a number of officer positions including that of Treasurer, Vice President, and President. During his time as President at Beth Torah the Congregation initiated both its membership and physical building expansion and commenced a successful multi-million dollar fundraising campaign. Stephen has acted for over two decades as General Counsel to a private academy that taught children with learning disabilities. Stephen and his wife Maura, are the proud parents of Drew, a 2015 TanenbaumCHAT graduate and Goldie, a 2017 TanenbaumCHAT graduate.
Sue Valencia '85
Sue is the proud mother of two TanenbaumCHAT grads (Adam ’17 and Megan ’19), and one current TanenbaumCHAT student (Jenna ’21). Sue obtained a BA (Psychology) from York University and a law degree from Western University. Sue began her legal career at Torys LLP where she practiced corporate law for two years before moving into the entertainment business. Sue worked in the film and television industry for 13 years, first as VP of Business and Legal Affairs at Atlantis Films, then Senior VP – Business Affairs and Executive Producer at Alliance Atlantis and VP Legal and Business Affairs at Nelvana, a division of Corus Entertainment Group. Since leaving the workforce, Sue has been active in the volunteer community, serving on the board of Bialik Hebrew Day School, as well as taking on the role of Chair of the Bialik PTA for two years, and more recently on the TanenbaumCHAT board where she is the chair of the Board’s Marketing and Communications Committee. Sue is also active in the minor hockey sports community, acting as VP – Select of the Forest Hill Hockey Association and serving on the board of directors of the Forest Hill Hockey Association. In her spare time, Sue is the trainer for her younger daughter's hockey team, enjoys cooking, reading and fitness (especially Peloton) and has taken up knitting during the pandemic.
